Newsletter | April 2024

Words from the President: Wow do we have a lot planned for our upcoming spring season at the club. An intro to shotgun class was held last Saturday where we had a group of students break their first clays! This weekend we have the kids shoot planned, the 1st ATA shoot shortly after and a rifle pistol match. Plus lots of maintenance and other activities in the works.

One of our larger projects this year is a remodel of our main clubhouse. Our clubhouse is great but it’s due for a makeover. We are forming a committee to brainstorm ideas and plan out the improvements that will include new flooring / carpet, painting the walls, ceiling and general sprucing up the place. The goal of the committee is to come up with a plan, but not necessarily be the ones doing the work. If you you are interested in joining the committee or helping with some of the renovations please email info@nlrgc.com Let’s work together to make the place look amazing!

Del Manuel: Del’s family and friends got together at the club this past Monday to celebrate his life and his dedication to NLRGC. We have a new stone marker to forever memorialize his name. Special thanks to Charlie Suffin who played Taps and Oh’ Danny Boy while Paul Donovan lowered the flag to half mast where it will stay for the month of April. His ashes were spread over the trap fields he built by a volley of shotguns. I can’t imagine a more fitting tribute. -Rest in peace Del.

Clay Target Price Increase: Effective May 1st, clay target prices will go up to:

  • Trap / Skeet
    • Members $4.00 per 25
    • Non members $5.00 per 25
  • 5 – Stand
    • Members $5.00 per 25
    • Non members $6.00 per 25

The club does not make money on practice targets. We only charge what it costs to throw a target. We did not increase the price arbitrarily. We looked back at the past years costs and thanks to some excellent bookkeeping by our treasurer we have an accurate accounting of the clay target expenses. The major factor here is that at the end of 2024 White Flyer was purchased by Winchester. They have increased prices on all clays for 2024. This increase hits the club with our April delivery of clays. It now costs the club $3.95 per round of 25 clays launched. This cost is only taking into account the clays, machine maintenance and electricity for the machines. Please note that 93% of the clubs’ expenses (such as taxes, insurance, grounds work and general clubhouse maintenance, part of waste management and utilities) are paid for by our membership fees. These costs do not get factored into the price of a round of trap or skeet.

Skeet News: Chair: Nils Bergenhem

Skeet is going strong with open hours Saturday and Sundays 9:00am-noon and Thursday’s 9:00am-noon. Stop by and learn how much fun Skeet can be!

The 5th, and last, skeet winter league shoot was held March 9th. Lenny Neil was the winner, Mike Doucet 2nd, George Dancause 3rd and Lairton Panighel 4th. Congratulations to all! The overall results for the winter league (average of best 3 shoots) saw George Dancause as the winner with Nick Muskopf 2nd, Nils Bergenhem 3rd, and Bill Asher 4th.

Trap News: Chair: Peter Mastrogiovanni

The trap committee has been super busy preparing for the upcoming season. All traps have had maintenance done and are in tip top shape to throw some of the best targets in new England.

We always are looking for help loading houses, running score sheets and scoring targets for ATA shoots. See Peter if interested. You get paid in coupons for free rounds of trap / skeet!

Even though the weather outside still feels like winter, Trap winter league finished up a few weeks ago. The winners of the AA class are: 1st – Michael Lombardy, Tied for 2nd – Bill Asher and Michael McIntyre, 3rd Paul Donovan. Congratulations for surviving breaking clays in the cold!

ATA season is around the corner. Here are 2024 dates:

  • Sunday May 19th : “Armed Forces”

Rifle Pistol News: Chair: Ian Kinloch

The next 2-gun shoot is scheduled for Sunday April 28th 11:00am-2:00pm. Bring your pistol and rifle!

As we start rebuilding the target stands please remember not to use shot of any kind on them. If you need to pattern in your shotgun use the patterning board down past the 5-stand and skeet field 1. You can use slugs at the 50y and 100y rifle berm but no bird shot. On the pistol side you can only use the shotgun gong all the way to the left. Send slugs, 00 buck shot or other defensive rounds at this gong, it can take it. No shotguns on the pistol plates or target stands please!

Reminder: Pistol and Rifle ranges are open 8AM till 1/2 hour before sunset.

5 Stand: We will be moving our course from skeet field one to trap field 9. This will give us more room for better targets as well as an easier to access location you can’t miss as you come up the club driveway. The 5 – stand committee is looking for some new members to help open up for shooting on weekends and at least one week night from spring though fall. If you are interested in helping out on 5 – stand contact Dave Mendel or anyone on the board.

Training Committee: Eric Mabie & Tom Spinelli

Upcoming Training – GOAL Gun Law Seminar with Jon Green May 8th 6:30pm – Free. Don’t miss this chance to get an update on the always changing and always confusing laws in the commonwealth.

High Flyers Youth Team: The spring opener for the SCTP youth team is Saturday April 6th. They could use some help scoring and loading houses with clays. Stop by and assist if you can. If you have a child 10+ through college age who might be interested in joining the team stop by the shoot to see them in action!
